A heavily restrained slow burn, this expanded cinema piece combines live performance and a film, with both narratives unfolding in the same open, wooden-floored living room. Each narrative thread tells a different part of the story of two student dancer friends as they chat, practice dance, and spend time together. Throughout the piece, the performers’ movements and gestures, both on screen and in reality, interact with and respond to one another.
The audience is seated at the same level as the performers with a four-channel sound system surrounding them. The system plays both the film’s sound and the live sound design.
The simultaneous unfolding of film and performance creates an experience where different moments in time overlap on the same timeline, and subconscious minds mirror each other. The retrospective structure of the piece echoes our own reflective thoughts on life. Meanwhile, the intertwining narrative form highlights the deep connection between the two characters’ lives.
